What are Human Rights?

Rob Clarke —

Learn what human rights are and figure out how well people in your local community understand this important concept!

Your Challenge

Research what human rights are in your local community and use this information to create a definition. Cross-check this with online sources once you have collected and presented the local knowledge.

Follow this Process

  1. Discuss what are human rights? As a class come up with a definition of this term that makes sense to you and other people your age.
  2. Watch the first 45 seconds of the movie The Story of Human Rights (above).
  3. Brainstorm ideas to the question how might you find out what people in your community think human rights are?
  4. Research by forming groups of 3-5 and design how you might research to find answers to your questions. You can use paper/pencil surveys, online surveys, video, audio. This data must be brought back to class and shared. You may present it any way you wish - even using this website.
  5. Summarise your results to present back to the class and via this web site.
  6. Take action and decide what you can do to take action to remedy your findings and/or raise awareness in your local community (this might your school, neighbourhood or a wider area).
  7. Capture and share these outcomes using photo and/or video and post on this site to inspire others.
