Educating young girls in Africa

Stephen Bryant —

Why is education for young girls such a major problem for Africa?

Your Challenge:

Is to understand more about the activities of Campaign for Education of Women (Camfed) in 5 African nations.

Follow this Process:

  1. Watch Hope for Africa's Girls and Access Camfed and watch the relevant videos on the site.

  2. Discuss the major issues facing young girls in Africa and once you have selected 4-5 topics break into groups to outline why they are major problems for girls’ education in Africa.

  3. Take this deeper by including in your study how this can be changed to improve educational opportunities for girls in Africa. The results can be presented back to the class in a format the suits your available presentation options (whiteboard, video etc).

  4. Take Action by looking closely into the activities of Camfed. Is it possible you can organise a fund raising activity for this organisation within your school?

  5. You may be able to organise a Skype call with one of the schools which is working with young girls in Zambia through Camfed to share your efforts to support them. Are they short of computer equipment/mobile phones for example that you may be able to assist with?

  6. Take this further by writing to the Minister for Foreign Affairs & Trade to suggest that Camfed may be a worthy recipient of a small amount of NZ Aid (it is receiving such assistance from the UK).

Educator Notes

To make this easier:
Choose a couple of topics and provide some talking points for the children to consider.

To Make this more challenging:
Encourage the children to develop a wide group of barriers to female education in Africa. Ask them to consider, as part of the presentation, what the benefits are for the nations from greater female involvement in education.
