How can social media change the world?

Molly Crossland —

Most of you will understand social media as apps to share your photos, videos and personal messages with others. Explain why campaigns for equality are significantly impacted by the power to reach a global audience through social media.

Follow this Process:

  1. Watch these four video clips as a class:

    1. Using Social Media For Change

    2. 4 Ways Social Media Has Changed The World

    3. Does social media have the power to change the world?

    4. How social media creates a better world: Jan Rezab at TEDxSSE (for advanced learners)

  1. Brainstorm in pairs brainstorm the ways you, and those around you, use social media everyday. Think outside the box. How do you and your parents find out about news, media, information about friends and contact each other? How may have this changed from the days when social media was non existent?

  2. Brainstorm further by discussing if it’s that easy for us to use social media to contact all of our friends, imagine how we could utilise it to inform the world? What does connectivity mean?

  3. Summarize your ideas by drafting a social media plan about how you would tell the world about the 17 global goals the UN has set. How could you use youtube to showcase goal number 5? How could you use instagram to spread awareness for number 16? Get creative!

  4. Present your social media strategy to the class. Explain why campaigns for equality are significantly impacted with the power to reach a global audience through social media.

  5. Take action and decide how will you use any social media or future social media accounts as a tool for change? How can you influence others through the outlets we have on a global stage?

  6. Capture and share these outcomes using photo and/or video to inspire others.

Educator Notes

To challenge:

  • Require groups to choose a specific global goal and use examples, statistics and case studies that are relevant in the presentation.

To simplify:

  • Do not watch the final video (TedX talk) as it is targeted for comprehensive learning
