What is deforestation?

Molly Crossland —

“An error does not become a mistake until you refuse to correct it.” Learn what deforestation means. Why does society continue to destruct natural resources and what is happening as a result?

Follow this Process:

  1. Watch these three video clips as a class:

    1. Dear future generations: Sorry.

    2. Deforestation animation

    3. The deforestation of the amazon (time lapse)

  2. Rewatch the first video in pairs and take note of your favourite quotes and describe to each other what they mean. What needs to be done to prevent the first half of the video becoming a reality? What does he mean by focusing on the ‘root’ of change?

  3. Brainstorm further by writing the quote from your challenge in the middle of a mind map. Draw arrows off the quote thinking of ways to ‘correct’ the effects of deforestation. What can be done through ‘root’ change? What can government organisations do to focus on saving the rainforest?

  4. Summarise your ideas by adding in a paragraph describing exactly what deforestation is, why it is so harmful to our world and what will happen as a result if change isn’t made.

  5. Present to the class, each taking turns to discuss your ideas.

  6. Take action and decide how you will use this knowledge to reduce the impact of deforestation? What changes will you make to reduce your carbon footprint? How could you put your ideas of change into plans for change?

  7. Capture and share these outcomes using photo and/or video to inspire others.

Educator Notes

To challenge:

  • Require groups to research organisations and companies that significantly contribute to deforestation and ask the groups to think of ways these organisations could operate differently.

To simplify:

  • Focus on basic understanding of what deforestation is and how it’s impacting our planet.
