What is social enterprise?

Molly Crossland —

What is an enterprise? What makes it 'social'? Discover why social enterprises are shaping the business industry and changing our world for the better.

Your Challenge:

Learn what the the term ‘social enterprise’ means.

Work in groups and explore social enterprises within our community that engage in environmental awareness or donate money to charity (choose from one of the three examples given).

From this, come back as a class and brainstorm all the positive changes these businesses are making in our world and come up with some social enterprises of your own.

Follow this Process:

  1. Watch these three video clips as a class to learn about social enterprise:

How to Start a Social Enterprise

A student exploration of social enterprise

  2. Divide into groups and each choose one of the three example videos. Write down what is the purpose of each social enterprise? What products do they sell? Why does this business help make the world a better place? What is the purpose of a ‘social enterprise’?

  3. Brainstorm as a group what ideas you would have for a social enterprise. What charity would you want support? What can you do to solve climate change? How could that be made into a business?

  4. Summarize your findings in a report (presentation, video) to present back to the class and/or school and via this website.

  5. Take Action by deciding how you can use your newfound knowledge to promote business that do good for our world, and think of new ways to grow the idea you came up with.

  6. Capture and Share these outcomes using photo and/or video and post on this site to inspire others.
