What is an ecosystem?

Molly Crossland —

Create a presentation about aquatic eco-systems to inspire and educate people in your community. Explain why sustaining ecosystems is important to the survival of our world.

Follow this Process:

  1. Watch these video clips about ecosystems as a class:

    1. Understanding ecosystems for kids

    2. Ecosystems: KLU Science

    3. Aquatic ecosystems

  1. In pairs rewatch the last video specifically about aquatic ecosystems. Take note of the key terms that are shown on screen.

  2. Brainstorm answers to the following questions: What makes up an ecosystem? Why do we need to sustain ecosystems to keep our planet healthy? What would happen to the things in an ecosystem if part of it was polluted?

  3. Summarise your ideas in a poster and recreate your own version of an aquatic ecosystem. On the back of the poster write a paragraph that summarises your answers to the questions above.

  4. Present to the class, reading out your paragraph.

  5. Take action and decide how you will use this knowledge to spread awareness of sustaining healthy ecosystems? What can you do to minimise this pollution if you see it in a river or the ocean in order to protect aquatic life?

  6. Capture and share these outcomes using photo and/or video on this website to inspire others.

Educator Notes

To challenge:

  • Require groups to take inspiration from the aquatic video but not recreate it in their poster. They must research an ecosystem on land and base the poster around this research.

To simplify:

Remove the paragraph task and instead focus on the poster.
