The Syrian refugee crisis.

Molly Crossland —

Your challenge is to figure out and confront why refugees are forced to leave their country. Why did they have to leave in the first place? What could peace and disarmament mean in solving the refugee crisis in Syria?

Follow this Process:

  1. Watch these video clips as a class:

    1. Europe's Refugee Crisis Explained (preview before showing younger learners)

    2. The European Refugee Crisis and Syria Explained

  2. Discuss in groups of three discuss what you have learnt from the videos.

  3. Brainstorm ideas about why refugees have are forced to leave their country. Why did they have to leave in the first place? What do you think would happen if the war ended and peace was brought to Syria?

  4. Summarise your ideas make a presentation (powerpoint, poster, video, speech). Use ideas from the videos to describe what the crisis is and how you think peace, disarmament of weapons and end of violence would solve the refugee crisis.

  5. Present your ideas to the class, taking turns to each answer sections of the presentation.

  6. Take action and decide how you will share your newfound knowledge about refugees. Consider how lucky you are to live in a peaceful country, what could your country do to help those who aren’t as fortunate as us?

  7. Capture and share these outcomes using photo and/or video and post on this site to inspire others.

Educator Notes

To make this more challenging:

Ask class to come up with questions of their own and do not provide a framework for the presentation.

To simplify this:

Give the groups example answers to the questions and focus the task around formatting the answers into a poster or slideshow.
