What does extinction mean?

Molly Crossland —

Create a presentation in groups that tells the class how and why species of animals in wildlife are dying out.

Your challenge

Gain a deep understanding of extinction and explain what extinction of endangered animals means.

Follow this Process:

  1. Watch these three youtube clips as a class:

    1. The Sixth Extinction

    2. Extinction of Species | Biology for All | FuseSchool

    3. Biodiversity loss/extinction rates

  2. Brainstorm by creating a venn diagram. One side will be labelled endangered and the other extinct. The middle section of your diagram will be what causes these two things to happen to animals. In groups of three create a large venn diagram.

  3. Go deeper in these sections of the diagram list species of animals you will research or know of that can be labelled by either extinct or endangered. Draw annotations, diagrams and notes that extend notes about each species and how it came to be endangered or extinct.

  4. Summarise your ideas by creating a presentation (poster, slideshow, video) to the class that compares your findings.

  5. Present to the class, ensuring you have answered the crucial question of: what does it mean when an animal goes from endangered to extinct. Add in images to support you presentation for visual effect.

  6. Take action and decide how to raise awareness for the conservation of endangered animals? Who in your community could you possibly show your presentation to if you can identify an endangered species in your area to prevent its’ extinction?

  7. Capture and share these outcomes using photo and/or video to inspire others. You can share them on this site if you like.

Educator Notes

To increase the level of challenge:

Ensure all groups have relative statistics that reinforce their argument. Ask for timelines, case studies and research analysis for the examples the come up with.

To make it more accessible:

Begin a collaborative venn-diagram as a class and ask groups to extend the class diagram, having inspiration and pre-existing research to base their presentation on.
