A fight for education like you’ve never seen before | UNICEF by UNICEF

Why is education in developing world countries so important?

Your challenge is to understand why education is the key to breaking the cycle of poverty in undeveloped countries. Why are we so lucky to have an education? What opportunities do you have that you wouldn’t have without an education?

Follow this Process:

  1. Watch these three video clips as a class:

    1. A fight for education like you’ve never seen before | UNICEF

    2. What does education mean to you? | UNICEF

    3. Breaking The Cycle Of Poverty Through Education

  2. In groups of three write a paragraph summarising what the first video was about, explaining what was happening to the girl in the animation.

  3. Brainstorm ways to answer the following questions: What opportunities do you have that you wouldn’t have without an education? Why is education the key to breaking the cycle of poverty? What does Unicef, the organisation in the videos, do for children in third world countries?

  4. Summarise your ideas make a presentation (powerpoint, poster, video, speech). Use quotes from the videos explaining why an education should be accessible for children everywhere.

  5. Present your creation to the class. The presentation should be two to three minutes.

  6. Take action and decide how you will share your newfound knowledge about why education is vital to breaking the cycle of poverty. How can you think of ways to support the organisation ‘Unicef’ in the videos?

  7. Capture and share these outcomes using poetry, photo and/or video and post on this site to inspire others.

Educator Notes

To make it more challenging:

  • Ask the class to come up with questions of their own and do not provide a framework for the presentation.

  • Get students to present it in such a way that increases the number of people the presentation reaches.

To simplify it:

  • Give the groups example answers to the questions and focus the task around formatting the answers into a poster or slideshow.

  • Provide a poster or slideshow template.
