WATCH: The reality of malnutrition among children by Rappler

How many of the world’s population live in hunger?

Come up with some solutions for the hungry people of the world. You will address the topic of malnutrition and discover how many of the world’s population lives in hunger. Why is this a global crisis? What are we doing to solve this? What more can be done to reduce this inequality?

Follow this Process:

  1. Watch these three video clips about malnutrition in third world countries as a class:

    1. The reality of malnutrition among children

    2. World in focus: Malnutrition: Everyday life for Africa’s youngest

    3. WFP and DSM: Solving malnutrition

  2. Summarise the key points from the videos in groups of three. Write down any statistics you find along the way.

  3. Brainstorm answers to the following questions: Why is malnutrition a global crisis? What is being done to solve this? What more can be done to reduce this inequality?

  4. Prepare your ideas to present to your community (speech, video, poster, slideshow) that best answers the above three questions.

  5. Present to the class, each member of the group answering one of the three questions.

  6. Take action and decide how you will use this knowledge to spread awareness of malnutrition in the world. What can you do to minimise this crisis? Will you reduce your food waste?

  7. Capture and share your presentation and inspire others by placing it on this website.

Educator Notes

To provide further challenge:

Require groups to come up with one more question about malnutrition that must be addressed in the presentation that must be researched independently from the videos.

To simplify:

Provide an answer structure to the questions and focus the task around formatting the answers into a presentation.
