What Does 'Third World Country' Mean? by NowThis World

What is the ‘developing world'?

Explain why people who live in what is regarded as part of the ‘‘developing world’ may lack hope. What is different about your everyday life and the everyday life of a child living in a third world country? Why does this divide exist and what can be done to minimise this gap in welfare?

Your Challenge:

Your challenge is to learn what the term ‘‘developing world’ means and unpack why people who live there may have a lack of hope. Come up with some reasons why this divide exists and what can be done to minimise it?

Follow this Process:

  1. Watch these four video clips as a class:

    1. The third world - an educational video for kids

    2. What is poverty - compassion international

    3. What is poverty?

    4. Why some countries are poor and others are rich (advanced learners)

  2. Watch the video What does ‘third world country’ mean? to understand what the term means and whether it is ‘right’ to use the term ‘third world’.

  3. Create a venn-diagram in groups of three: one section discussing what factors relate to a country in a ‘first world’ circumstance and another in a ‘third world’ circumstance. Then at the intersecting section of your diagram write what could be done to bridge these inequalities.

  4. Brainstorm further and make a final copy of your diagram on a poster you will present to the class. Then write below the diagram the answers to the following questions: Why does this divide exist and what can be done to minimise this gap in welfare?

  5. Summarise your ideas by thinking of any further ideas you can contribute to help end the cycle of poverty in a third world. What can institutions such as the United Nations do to? What can you do?

  6. Present to the class, each taking turns to discuss your ideas.

  7. Take action and decide ‘how you will use this knowledge to further your understanding of poverty?’ Use the ideas you discovered into practice and remember the opportunities you are lucky to have; what can you do to help ensure those opportunities are made available to everyone?

  8. Capture and share these outcomes using photo and/or video to inspire others.

Educator Notes

To provide further challenge:

  • Require groups to research organisations within New Zealand aside from the U.N that support third world countries and add this information to the poster.

  • Get students to design some research to find out on a broad level (ie. across the community, every student in the school, etc.) peoples’ understanding of the terms ‘third world’ or ‘developing countries’ are. Then taking those findings create some sort of campaign to raise awareness.

To simplify:

  • Focus on basic understanding of what a third world is and exclude the added questions about solving the problem.

  • Get students to conduct some informal research at home and around their community to find out what people understand the terms ‘third world’ or ‘developing countries’ are.
