I Am NOT Black, You are NOT White. by Prince Ea

What is race discrimination and why is it a factor of inequality?

What exactly is racial discrimination? How does racism promote inequality, spread hate and unethical perceptions of people?

Follow this Process:

  1. Watch Prince EA’s visual poem I Am NOT Black, You are NOT White, as well as supporting videos two (Bystander action) and three (The Story of Martin Luther King Jr. by Kid President) to learn about the term 'racial discrimination', its history and why it has no place in society.

Create a mind map in pairs with the term racial discrimination in the centre. Think of every association, explanation and history you can associate with the term after watching the videos. You will use this as a base of inspiration for your upcoming presentation.
Brainstorm which points, ideas and historical context aspects you believe perfectly explain what racial discrimination is. Use these points to then connect the term to inequality.
Summarise your ideas by creating a video presentation or speech inspired by Prince EA’s visual poem you have watched. In your own words, based off of your mind map and refined brainstorm, each pairs presentation must answer: What is race discrimination and why is it a factor of inequality?
Present Each presentation does not have to be longer than two minutes but must be at least a minute.
Take action and decide how will you use your understanding of racism to ensure that it has no place in our community? If you ever witness racial discrimination taking place what will you do to stand up for what is right?
Capture and share these outcomes using photo and/or video to inspire others.

Educator Notes

To provide further challenge:

  • Require groups to research more into the case of Martin Luther King Jr. and provide examples, case studies and statistics about his fight for racial equality in the presentation. The presentation can be extended in to allow for this.

  • Make a comparison between the experience of Martin Luther King Jr. and another country of your choice. What are the similarities? What are the differences? What can we learn from these cases?

To simplify: Groups are exempt from presenting a speech and can instead create a poster or visual display that is a refined version of their mind map.
