ACE Science Short: Ocean Acidification by Alliance for Climate Education

Ocean acidification and the health of our planet

What is ocean acidification and why are humans held accountable? How is it affecting the health of our planet, especially eco-systems in the ocean?

Follow this Process:

  1. Watch ocean acidification explained in under two minutes and ACE Science short: Ocean Acidification.

  2. Create a timeline that explains what causes ocean acidification. In groups of three, refer back to the videos for pointers and examples.

  3. Brainstorm the three main causes of ocean acidification. Choose the three that seem to be due to human impact on our planet.

  4. Summarise your ideas by creating a presentation that reflects your initial timeline, but refined with your three main causes made more prominent. Make it visually appealing as a poster presentation (or as a video to share via the internet), get creative and think of what kind of illustrations you can add to aid your descriptions. Alternatively, you can make a digital poster/slideshow/prezi. Regardless of the way you wish to share your ideas, the three main causes must be obvious focal points.

  5. Present the poster, each member of the group choosing one of the chosen three reasons. Explain and define what ocean acidification is and then explain how it’s progression impacts the health of our planet.

  6. Take action and decide who could you present to outside the classroom? Can you think of a way your newfound knowledge could influence your community to make a difference?

  7. Capture and share to inspire the work of others on this website.

Educator Notes

To provide further challenge:
Require groups to find exact statistics and facts about the science behind ocean acidification and include them in the presentation. E.g. what is the ph scale and how does it change with increased co2 ions?

To simplify:

Work collaboratively as a class to create a timeline and then split into groups to decide the three main contributing factors of ocean acidification.
