Teaching the basics brilliantly

Upper Harbour Primary School —

Read about how we will continue to teach the basics brilliantly, focussing on Reading, Writing and Maths each day.

At UHPS we value the development of numeracy and literacy and prioritise this learning through explicit teaching, as well as throughout other curriculum areas, including our inquiry QuESTS learning.

Learning to read, write, and do maths is important in everything we do. Daily teaching in these areas has always been a part of what we do at UHPS. This has been shown to lift student progress, when coupled with a high-quality curriculum taught using evidence-informed teaching practices.   At UHPS this is evidenced by a return to our historically high levels of achievement following an uninterrupted school year in 2023.

Our Teachers deliberately and purposefully dedicate time to teaching these core skills. Teaching techniques like investigations, collaborative learning, and games will continue to be used to extend and enhance their learning.

One way we make students learning clear for whānau is using Hero to report in real time. Parents can clearly understand where their child is at, and what their next learning step is, in reading, writing and maths and can view learning goals at any time.
