Introducing Mitey: Strengthening Wellbeing in Our School
We are delighted to partner with Mitey over the next year to grow and support the mental health and wellbeing of all our students.
The Sir John Kirwan Foudnation has designed Mitey with NZ teachers and the University of Auckland to provide an evidence-based approach to teaching mental health education to primary and intermediate aged children.
It is aligned to the NZ curriculum and embedded into everyday learning, to ensure children are equipped with the age-appropriate skills and knowledge they need to recognise and respond to mental health challenges in both themselves and others before they enter teenage years.
Mitey has successfully implemented its approach to school in Auckland and we are excited to be included.
How Mitey Supports Our Strategic Wellbeing Goals
At Upper Harbour, wellbeing is a priority. One of our key strategic goals is to design, implement, and embed an Upper Harbour Wellbeing Model. Our school already uses Te Whare Tapa Whā, a Māori health model that recognises the importance of taha wairua (spiritual), taha hinengaro (mental and emotional), taha tinana (physical), and taha whānau (social) wellbeing.
Mitey will further support this by:
✔ Embedding mental health education within classroom learning, rather than as an add-on.
✔ Providing students with practical strategies to build emotional and social wellbeing.
✔ Ensuring teachers are well-supported with professional development and resources to lead mental health education effectively.
