Devices & BYOD at UHC

UHC Admin —

Some of the most frequently asked questions about the start of the new school year are around bringing devices to school.

Devices / BYOD

The use of a digital device eg Chromebook or laptop is becoming the norm in classrooms now. With a device, students are able to connect and collaborate with other students and their teacher, use various sites and search for information, and show their learning in a variety of ways including presentations, animations and movie-making (as well as good old written work!).

Also, NZQA is changing how students can do their NCEA exams (in Year 11) – from hand-written papers, to online, using a device. This reflects the way students already interact with the world and how they are doing much of their learning, helping prepare them for their next steps after school. Being regular users of digital technology from Year 9 ensures our students will be confident when they get to Year 11.

Therefore, we strongly encourage all students to bring their own digital device to school (eg Chromebook or laptop).

We are a Google Apps school, so students can access their email and docs through Google Classroom for learning at school and learning@home.

For Year 9 & 10 students, Chromebooks are sufficient for requirements at this level - the device that students were using in Year 8 will be find for college.
