Students Feel The Pulse Of Hutt Hospital

UHC Admin —

A small groups of UHC students were given the opportunity to experience some of the roles that are available in the industry. Year 11 student Diana Hicks tell us about the day, which was sponsored by Kia Ora Hauora and the Hutt Valley DHB.

We were fortunate to be given this fantastic opportunity, along with other schools in the area, as it was the first time in many years the DHB had run this type of programme for college students interested in a career in the health sector.

Our morning started with a Mihi Whakatau and Karakia before we began learning about some of the jobs they have at the hospital. Over the course of the day we learned about the following areas of health: Respiratory, Radiology, Dentistry, Nursing and Midwifery and we all gained valuable insights into what each of these involve.

We also learned about the important role of the people whose main job it is to sterilise all the equipment used within the hospital. I didn’t even realise that was a job before they spoke to us about it!

Some of the amazing hands-on things we got to do included taking blood sugars, checking blood pressure and practising putting two parts of a bone together using a bolt

My favourite part of the programme was the nursing rotation. It made me realise just how much I want to work in the health sector and to help people in need. I could see everybody at the hospital was very hardworking, kind and were passionate about helping people. I can’t wait to join the team one day!

On behalf of myself and the other girls, we want to say thank you to the people who made this happen - we are alI grateful to have had this experience.
