Cassius Cleans Up at CSW Disability Athletics

UHC Admin —

Lead by a outstanding display from Cassius Jane, the UHC team had a very successful day at the CSW Disability Athletics. Teacher in Charge of Awhina, Anne Beckett reports on the memorable event.

On Tuesday 26th February six students from Awhina joined 201 athletes from 14 schools to compete in the annual Disability Sports at Newtown Park Stadium.

Each student participated in 3 events in the Non-Championship Competition and they all represented Upper Hutt College with great pride and determination, trying their very best and encouraging each other in their respective pursuits.

The team had fun catching up with old classmates from their primary and intermediate schools and produced some great results out on the track and field.

Our best event was the Vortex throw in which all our students participated. Three of our team finished in the top 5 out of a field of 103 with Cassius Jane gaining first place with a throw of 47.70 metres which was 19.5 metres further than the second place getter’s distance!

Cassius also came first in the 100 Metres Race with a time of 15.32 seconds which would have gained him 7th place if he had competed in the Championship final.

His time automatically qualified him for entry in the College Sport Regional Athletics Meeting which was held on Tuesday 30th March.

Cassius competed in the AWD 100 metres in wet and windy conditions and finished in 4th place with a time of 15.08 seconds.

This was an extremely worthy result as Cassius was competing in an open grade against older, stronger athletes.

We are very proud of his efforts in representing Awhina and Upper Hutt College at this level of competition.
