Students Make a Positive Stand in Pink Shirt Day

UHC Admin —

As part of the national Pink Shirt Day celebrations, UHC staff and students turned the school into a sea of pink! Amid a hive of activities, students also got on board in classes with HOC201 students even creating pink crepes. Student Miya Abbott-Tutaki tells us how the day went.

UHC stood tall to show our stance against bullying. The day was organised by members of the student council, and there were many wonderful events throughout the day that everyone could get involved in.

We had cookie decorating in the hall (pink themed of course), and a kahoot running at interval, which brought in lots of students, who all got really into it. They were asked questions about Pink Shirt Day, and some general knowledge questions, and we had some great prizes for the winner and the runner up.

After interval, a group of us got together to hand out the gifts that students had purchased for another person throughout the week, which we called Pay It Forward. The idea was that we’d go around the classes with a lucky dip, full of fun little gifts attached to inspirational quotes, in hopes of lighting up that person’s day. All of the gifts were given anonymously, and if anyone didn’t want their gift, they could pay it forward to someone else who they believed deserved it. It was great to see the faces of those who received gifts, and how much happiness these little acts of kindness spread around the school.

At lunch, while Mr Roger was making candy floss for a long line of students, all craving something sweet, Just Dance videos were playing in the hall. Students got together in their friend groups to have some fun and see who had the best moves. There were lots of laughs, and it was amazing to see so many students getting involved and really enjoying themselves.

Throughout the day, we also had a scavenger hunt going on, a pink shirt colouring competition, and a best dressed competition. While all of the submissions were amazing and showed incredible talent, Devin Carr won our pink shirt colouring competition, with her beautiful picture that we believed really symbolised what this day was all about. Mackenzie Brewer won our best dressed competition, with Emily Blackadder coming as runner up. They both really got into the spirit of Pink Shirt Day, and we loved their outfits that they wore to show their support.

This was a great day, and it was so nice to see everyone getting involved, and really enjoying themselves. Thank you to everyone who helped make this day happen, your hard work didn’t go unnoticed, and it was an amazing day for all, with such an important message behind it.
