Kash named College Sport Wellington Official of the Year!
Despite Term 4 still being in its infancy and the senior students shifting their attention to exam preparation, there is still plenty of sport happening around the place. Sports Activator Chris Campbell takes a quick look at some of the highlights so far from a busy Term 4!
College Sport Wellington Sports Person of The Year Awards (SPOTY'S)
College Sport Wellington hosted their annual SPOTY awards dinner at the Te Rauparaha Arena in Porirua recently.
Upper Hutt College sent lots of nominations across all of our codes and three of our students were selected as finalists, Josh Tia (Para Sport), Finn Darrall (Shooting) and Kash Tapa (Official of the Year).
This is an incredible achievement and all three students should feel proud to be recognised for their achievements in front of their peers, from around the Wellington Region.
The good news doesn't end there, our Upper Hutt College Small Bore Rifle Shooting team were awarded a coveted pennant for the best Shooting team in the region and Kash Tapa took home the award for the Official of the Year!
Kash is one of the top up and coming basketball referees in the country and is held in extremely high regard in the Wellington basketball scene. Nothing is ever too much for Kash and he is always willing to give up his spare time to allow others to play basketball in a well managed, safe environment.
Basketball 3v3
UHC sent three junior 3v3 basketball teams to the recent Wellington Regional Champs held at the Walter Nash Stadium.
Our Premier Boys, Division One Boys and a Premier Girls team all navigated their way through pool play and worked tirelessly throughout the day.
Their efforts were rewarded by some impressive overall placings. The Division One Boys placed second, the Premier Boys finished 3rd and our girls side finished 4th. Well done to all teams.
Powerlifting
UHC is now home to some of the strongest students in the Wellington region, especially if the recent results at the College Sport Wellington Powerlifting Champs are anything to go by.
The events at the championships were Max Bench Press, Deadlift and Squat.
Keziah Ross finished 3rd in the U16 Male Division, Ezekiel Ross finished 4th in the Senior Male Division, Lucas Warenczuk finished 8th in the Under 16 Male Division and Ricky Huxedurp placed 1st in the Senior Male Category and also took out the top total award!
Ricky's results were a 205 kg Squat, 120 kg Bench Press and a 232.5 kg Deadlift. Considering Ricky is only in Year 11, his future in powerlifting is incredibly bright!
