Lockdown Learning & Activities

UHC Admin —

As New Zealand and the Wellington Region were thrust into a second Level 4 Lockdown in as many years - there was plenty happening in the wider Upper Hutt College community.

Our students and teachers moved seamlessly to Learning@Home, and classes began operating off Google Meets and continuing with the Google Classroom learning.  Learning had to be adapted - and adapted it was.  Throughout the wider school there were lots of pockets of action.

Junior Physical Education students were tasked with replicating their favourite Olympic moments either in pictorial form or in a video.  Here is Emily Blackadder's rendition of the men's rowing 8's Daniel Williamson hitting the water after their historic win.  At the same time Edison Yang's animated rendition of Hayden Wilde's triathlon medal is also worth watching.

Meanwhile Year 9 Art classes have been learning about colour theory and made the colour wheel out of household objects instead of paint.

Some of Ms Ghosh's BIO101 students have been deliberately letting bread go mouldy at home, as they investigate how temperature impacts this process!  Apologies to the families for enduring this.

Ms Davis' 9TW Science class did a practical lesson at home on different densities of materials - and made Anzac biscuits as a result!

13Hospitality & Catering class were set the task of creating a meal following special dietary requirements, Alaa Alhayek's meal of hummus with vegetables and pita bread fulfilled all the requirements for a vegetarian meal and was beautifully presented too.

Ako Classes have been meeting weekly for a general check in.  Many also like to test their general knowledge with The Dominion Post quiz a popular.

Don't be alarmed if your student is in 9MS and they are rummaging through the trash.  Ms Sudfeldt has her students for English looking at recycling and sustainability related to their film study/ next week - specifically examining how sustainable they are at home and how they can improve their household habits around this.

With dollars in the eyes, Year 11 Commerce students have been advising the Upper Hutt City Council on how to spend a $50,000 grant and will be reporting back to them soon.   Watch this space!

In a somewhat controversial move Year 12 Commerce students made the decision that Upper Hutt College should be privatised with staff shareholders.  This was based on the Xero model that saw the company share price increase from $10 to $150 with staff owning over 50% of the shares.

In some junior Maths classes, students have been designing and making mailboxes for the measurement topic.  Some of the 9MS creations are pictured below.

Communication

The latest Government announcement has said we will be returning to Level 3 this week, with a further announcement on Monday 6th about the next step - which could see students return to school that week.  We will all watch this space to see what is announced!

There has also been lots of communication to students and parents with updates as the Lockdown developed and updates provided by the Ministry of Education to inform what we could do as a school.

Under the information tab of the school website can be found copies of all communication home, learning plans for the week for all year levels and subjects, as well as information for students.  Link to school website.
