Japanese students venture to Wellington

UHC Admin —

Year 10 Japanese students were treated to a day out in Wellington, sampling the cuisine, soaking up the culture and visiting the Embassy. Students Aryanna Billington and Anastasia Bradley run through the day.

The Year 10 Japanese class took a trip to three famous Japanese destinations in Wellington- the Tatsushi Restaurant, the Daiso Store, and the Japanese Embassy. The purpose of the trip was to immerse the class in Japanese culture, and to teach them about the Japanese country.

After an interestingly social van trip, we arrived at the restaurant Tatsushi, and practised ordering in Japanese. The staff were extremely kind, and we were served green tea along with our meals, courtesy of Sensei. We had all different sorts of foods, such as vegetable curry, sashimi bowls, and udon noodle soup. We ate with chopsticks and spoons, and all greatly enjoyed our meals.

After the oishii (yummy) meal at Tatsushi, we made our way through the rough weather to the Daiso Store. Here we browsed its entire contents for something to buy. The products varied from delicious treats, such as noodles and pocky, to quirky stationery, such as erasers that look like toilets, to quaint little porcelain bowls.

Next, we finally made our way to the Majestic Centre, where we rode the elevators to the Japanese Embassy. There we gazed at the view while waiting for our guide. When Rosa came, she quizzed us on some questions about Japan and filled in some gaps in our knowledge. We then learnt a new game Karuta (basically like snap), where we had to slap the correct Japanese food. That was soon followed by a chopsticks race. Both games were won by Team Five, consisting of QiQi, Kez, Aaliyah and Bella. Congrats to them all. We then were left to wander around the Embassy until it was time to go home.

Thank you to everyone who made this amazing trip possible, we had a blast!
