Media students get a "cense" for new film

UHC Admin —

Senior Media Studies students spent a day acting as censors and classifying a new movie. Student Serena Jacobson tells us what happened and the rating they determined.

Three Year 12 and 13 Media Studies classes went on a trip to Censor For A Day at the Hutt pop-up Readings Cinema.

We learned about how the classification office operates and the work that goes into classifying films, games, novels and TV series. We got the opportunity to watch the new film ‘Cocaine Bear ‘ and work through the film classification process.

While watching this film we had to look out for objectionable content including themes of sex, horror, crime, cruelty, and violence. Afterwards we had a discussion about what we thought the classification of the film should be. We took into account all of the themes mentioned above and came to the conclusion that the film should be given a rating of R16.

It turns out we were correct and gave it the same rating as the Chief Censor.

This was a fun and educational experience especially because this trip was relevant to what we were studying currently in class.
