Holocaust Centre Makes an Impression

UHC Admin —

As part of the the Year 9 Social Science curriculum experience, one class headed into Wellington to visit the Holocaust Centre for an educational experience. Student Lors Cowley reflects on the experience.

Our journey began once we hopped off the bus, and walked a couple minutes to the centre. we all gathered into a room and we were greeted by the friendly stuff. We started off with an open discussion on anti-Semitism. We also talked about anti-Semitism in our current society, and how it’s changed over the course of many decades.

After this, we also discussed the different phases of this awful event, including the preparation, where they showed us how they painted Jewish people out to be evil, and the discrimination the show towards innocent Jews.

Then we split into two groups and got shown real memorabilia from the Holocaust. We got shown Jewish passports, and how they had stamps so you could immediately be identified as a Jew. This was a slow lead up to the ”Final Solution”.

Right after that , we walked across to the synagogue which was right next door to the centre. The teacher there talked to us about the interior design and what it means.

After that we walked to the war memorial place and had lunch. We then caught a bus back to school.

Overall this was a very educational experience, and it was definitely worth going to.
