Pink Shirt Day reinforces anti-bullying message
UHC students and staff have celebrated Pink Shirt Day in style. Wellbeing Committee leader Ellie Cowley runs through how Upper Hutt celebrated.
This is an anti-bullying event which reminds us to celebrate diversity and promote kindness. The event originated in America where a boy was bullied for wearing a pink shirt and seniors stepped in the next day all of them wearing pink shirts.
The pink shirt has become a symbol of sticking up for others and raising awareness about anti bullying, especially in schools.
Our kura ran several events to celebrate this day. At interval students were given the opportunity to send pink stars with personal messages of kindness to their peers.
At lunchtime there was a free sausage sizzle and candy floss stand. Pink shirt day was a non uniform day where students were encouraged to wear pink.
Many students did and a select few students went all out. The “best dressed” students were awarded chocolates. These events were organised by the wellbeing committee and the student council.
