Students have a Karaka time

UHC Admin —

HOC301 students visited Karaka Cafe in Wellington as part of their course - leaning lots and experiences some Aotearoa culinary delights. Teacher Anna Holman tells us about the trip.

We started our visit in the waka house, Te Wharewaka o Pōneke, where we were hosted by Paul Retimanu, the Director of Manaaki Management and the National Vice-President of Hospitality NZ.

Paul gave us an introduction to Karaka Cafe as well as a talk about careers in the Hospitality industry. Paul was able to give each student feedback on their personal career aspirations, both in hospitality and outside the hospitality sector.

After the talk we were fortunate enough to sample hāngi, rēwana and kūmara parai. This linked into our current topic including culinary products and food preparation methods and it was also a delicious way to bring an Aotearoa perspective into our learning.
