MP tells students "if you work hard, anything is achieveable"

UHC Admin —

Students Keltia Robinson-Reidy and Samara Bridgen of 9HS tell us what happened when Chris Bishop, National MP, visited UHC.

Mr Bishop shared his opinions and insights with three Year 9 Social Studies classes and taught us about inflation and how the government works.

It was really interesting when he told us about the positive aspects of his job. This included helping a refugee family and a story of him helping remove a trailer which apparently took three years to accomplish!

He also shared the negative aspects of his job for instance he recently had a child, seeing he has to work long hours he can’t see his boy as much as he would like to.

Bishop also discussed the difficulties of being in the public eye. The internet is cruel, “people feel like they can say whatever they want because they're anonymous,” he said. "People like to judge MP's quite a lot which can be hard on a person especially if they are in the public eye a lot".

Chris Bishop went to Petone College and his favourite subjects were English and History. He slowly worked his way up and was first elected to Parliament in 2014. He shows us that if you work hard enough then anything is achievable.

He talked to us about why it is important that young people vote, especially because 18-24 year olds are the ones who vote the least. Mr Bishop answered our questions and asked for our opinions on mental health care services and problems in the community.

On behalf of the year 9 Social Studies classes, thank you for visiting us at Upper Hutt College.
