Cellphones at school

UHC Admin —

Students using their cellphones while at school has become an issue in a number of schools

At the start of 2020, we instituted a ban on cellphones for Year 9 and 10 students, along with senior students having their cellphones 'off and away' in classes. Students could only use their cellphone in class if permitted by the teacher for teaching and learning purposes.

There were several reasons for this, primarily to ensure students are focussed on their learning in the classroom without the distractions of cellphones, and that teachers do not have to monitor inappropriate use of cellphones.

The lockdown interrupted that process, and when students returned to school we heeded concerns of parents and allowed all students to hold onto their phones.

However, we intend to start the new year off cellphone-free in the junior school and will review this at the end of Term 1.
