John Parsons speaks to Year 10

UHC Admin —

John Parsons, a Cyber Security specialist from Citizen21, spoke with Year 10 students about the crucial subject of online safety. Student Vetri Senthilkumar runs through the valuable experience.

Mr Parsons introduced the concept of 'Identity Assets', suggesting the idea of building a good online persona by sharing positive stories about family, friends, and community experiences.

He also highlighted the impact of what we say online, pointing out that future employers might consider the things we post online during background checks. Less than cautious posts or comments could potentially harm our chances of employment.

Mr Parsons was particularly focused on the potential dangers of sharing personal information on the internet. He described harmful online traps like 'sextortion', a trap where a victim is manipulated into sharing nude images, which are then used by the perpetrator to blackmail the victim. Emphasising immediate action, Mr Parsons recommended that victims inform a trusted adult and alert the police.

In conclusion John Parsons' talk provided the Year 10 students with a key understanding of the potential risks and rewards associated with the internet and social media.
