Passing exams - support for students

UHC Admin —

As we get closer to the final NZQA external examinations students need to engage in a revision programme.

To be successful they should be active learners, so they are involved in their study session. Active learners will:·

  • Highlight key words as they read and study
  • Underline key words as they read and study
  • Write down key words as they read and study
  • Ask questions as they read and study
  • Be positive and condition yourself. Study will become a habit if you try to study at the same time every day.
  • Brainstorm – make mind maps of your notes
  • Discuss topics and problems with another person.
  • Set tasks or questions to answer while they are reading.

For students struggling with HOW to study you may want to consider completing an online course such as the one at https://innervate.co/innervate-online/

Useful websites to help prepare for exams are:

1. http://www.nzqa.govt.nz/qualifications-standards/qualifications/ncea/subjects/ - this is the NZQA website that contains the last 3 years of exams papers that you can download and use for practise. It also has examples of what you needed to do to achieve merit and excellence grades.

2. http://www.studyit.org.nz/ - this website contains useful information for English, Science and Mathematics. It also offers advice for study and exams.

We will also run an in-school tutorial programme focused on exam preparation in Week 4 of Term 3. More details on this will follow in Term 4
