Cricketers Bowl Over HIBS On Their Way To Success

UHC Admin —

Sport has enjoyed another strong year, and finishing the year off on a great note were our cricketers. Sports Activator Chris Campbell tells us what has been happening.

Our 1st XI cricketers wrapped up the sporting year for Upper Hutt College on Saturday in style!

The various futsal and volleyball sides finished two weeks ago and for both codes it was a case of close but no cigar, when it came to silverware, either bowing out in semi-finals or falling agonisingly short in finals.

The equation for the 1st XI cricketers was simple, win the game on Saturday against HIBS and they will be the Premier 4 champs.

We batted first and posted an impressive 219 all out. Our two openers were dismissed early for three runs between them; however, the innings was resurrected by Cullen Donaldson (Heretaunga) and Ted Beaumont Yee, who both knocked valuable half centuries. A slight wag in our tail and some loose bowling from HIBS gave us 47 extras and a more than defendable total.

The 2nd innings began well for HIBS and it wasn't until the 40 min mark that we got our breakthrough, with Aman Joshi taking a good catch from Joel Wood's bowling.

The HIBS middle order showed good resolve and the game was coming down to the wire until our death bowlers were able to get stuck into a soft HIBS tail end.

Fortunately for us we were able to bowl HIBS out for 202 and claim the title of Premier 4 Champions 2021!

The team farewells Year 13, Sam Kircaldie however, the rest of the side will be back in term one next year to make the step up to Premier 3.

A massive thanks to the coaching staff of Derek, Mark and Grant for all of their effort and commitment to the growth and development of cricket at Upper Hutt College and Heretaunga College.

The game is in good shape and we are looking forward to adding a Year 9 and 10 team to the ranks next year.
