Poets show their spine

UHC Admin —

UHC students went one step further in celebrating World Poetry Day by making it a week-long celebration. 11AG's Aryanna Billington reflects on the successful week.

World Poetry Day is held on the 21st of March and has been ever since 1999 when the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) created it with “the aim of supporting linguistic diversity through poetic expression and increasing the opportunity for endangered languages to be heard”.

Here in Upper Hutt College, we not only celebrated that day but also turned it into Poetry Week, with the help of Mrs Molloy in conjunction with the library.

The activities consisted of Found Poetry on Monday, Book Spine Poetry on Tuesday with Chalk Poems on Wednesday, and on Friday we did Poetry Illustrations.

There were awards such as who turned up to the most events, and also the people’s choice award. This went to:

  • Vincent Cordner 12OH and Perron Walden 12IH for the found poetry
  • Isabelle Radcliffe and Zoe Petersen, both from 11AG, for book spine poetry
  • Emily-Jane Butler 12OH, Olivia Trevean 11AG and Mrs Fiona Hall for the poetry illustrations
  • Emily Don 10WT, Zoe O’Sullivan 9HB, and Mr Dawald Pieterse for the haiku challenge that went out to some ako classes.

Overall it was an amazing experience and brought a lovely environment to our school. Thanks to all who made it possible.

Please note that the pictures below have the UHC entry name and then their entry.
