Learning in Lockdown

UHC Admin —

From the announcement to move from Level 2 to Level 3 on Monday 23 March and the resulting lockdown 2 days later, to the eventual full reopening of the school on Monday 18 May, the school and its students made the most of the situation.

The school moved to online learning from Thursday 26 March. There was no time to prepare or organise a consistent delivery model, so there were a range of approaches used by teachers. The initial rush of information paused slightly when it was announced that Term 1 would end on Friday, after a few days. A number of teachers and students continued to provide, and ask for, work, supported in many cases by teacher aides.

Some teaching and learning in lockdown continued almost the same as in the classroom, especially where textbooks and workbooks were available. Practical subjects saw students doing personal fitness work in PE, Adventure students practised shelter-building, Textiles work continued where possible and Foods students cooked at home and critiqued by parents, and some made videos on being safe in the kitchen. Drama students rehearsed lines via class zoom meetings, and Dance students danced together via zoom and informal tiktok videos.

102 UHC chromebooks were distributed to students. 30 of these were delivered via courier, the remainder were delivered by SLT members. We requested a number of Ministry-supplied chromebooks for juniors and hard material resources for students without internet connections.
