Students abuzz at Spelling Bee

UHC Admin —

Knowing how to spell words such as “accommodate” and “exuberant” were the key to winning the Year 9 and 10 Spelling Bee competition. Students Elizabeth Kananghinis and Thamar Smyrni report.

On a Friday afternoon, 27th of November, the Junior Spelling Bee took place. There were around 35 students who competed, half were Year 9’s and half Year 10’s. The first round consisted of 30 words being called out by Mr Martin which the students would write on a piece of paper. The top twelve in each year level proceeded to the next round.

First up were the Year 9’s. The top 12 sat at the front of the classroom and they were handed whiteboards and markers. Mr Martin then began the test. After a couple of rounds the word “accommodate” popped up. Out of the 8 students left, only one student spelled it correctly: Elizabeth Kananghinis. Robin Meijer came second place and Thamar Smyrni came third.

Next up, were the Year 10’s. “Exuberant” was the winning word which put Joel Baker in first place, Kaito Maud second, and Phoenix Crawley in third.
