Climbers ascend Titahi Bay

UHC Admin —

As part of the Level 3 Adventure course, students spent a day taking on the rock face at Whitireia Park in Titahi Bay. Student Tayla Jarvis reports.

The day started innocently enough as we nervously gathered at the gym bright and early. We were shocked to find out we were not heading for the comfort of Hang Dog but to the actual rocks and cliffs of the outdoors.

Arriving at the top of Whitireia Park we quickly put on helmets and started the descent to the rock face. The walk down was perilous and took balance and coordination, many in the class were found wanting in these areas.

The rock face looked daunting but Miss MacTaggart reassured us it was no match for our positive attitude and good vibes.

We spent the day climbing, falling (in a controlled manner), belaying, lowering, supporting and enjoying the outdoors. Some students like Johanna were able to demonstrate great skill and technique metres above the ground, while others demonstrated all of their skills while safely on the ground.
