Sporting Success for UHC

UHC Admin —

With the winter season now at an end, there is much to celebrate across the many teams who represented UHC. In what has been a difficult year for all, it was great to get a full season of sport completed for our students, although it looked a little different. Congratulations to everyone who represented the college this season for their attitude, dedication and effort. Here are some of the highlights from the teams who played in finals.

Netball

Our 10A netball girls went into their final against Sacred Heart College having not lost a game for the entire season. The final was a close affair in the first 3 quarters of the game, however, our girls managed to pull away from Sacred Heart and won the game 30-19. The perfect season for the girls and deserved Collegiate 7 winners for 2020.

Like their older counterparts our 9A netball side also went into their final against Hutt Valley High School undefeated, however after putting on a great display they narrowly lost 19 - 17.

The future of Netball looks strong at UHC with these sides coming through, well done girls and we look forward to seeing you on the court next year.

Basketball

We had two basketball teams feature in grade finals this year, the Junior Girls and the Premier Reserve Boys. The junior girls faced off against a strong Wellington East Girls’ side at the Walter Nash Stadium and put on a great display to push their opposition for the entire game. Unfortunately it was not meant to be and our girls finished as runners up of the grade. Congratulations on a great season.

The Premier Reserve boys have worked hard all year and it showed in their grade final against Taita College at the ASB stadium. A complete team performance resulted in a 54-45 victory, and a Division 4 Championship medal, well done boys!

Football

After winning the Hutt Valley division our Girls 1st XI football team played Wellington East Girls College in a zone play off match. The reward for the winner was a place in the Regional Final against Otaki College. The game started frantically, East threatened 3 times in the first 5 minutes, however our girls kept their composure and booked themselves a ticket to the big show, with a 6-0 victory.

In typhoon-like conditions the girls competed for the Regional Division 2 crown against Otaki College at Ascot Park. The weather was always going to have a say in this game and the team who adapted the quickest would be favourites. Fortunately, it was us! The girls played some great football taking the wind out of the equation by keeping the ball on the ground. Very well deserved 5-1 winners and another undefeated team!

Rugby

The last team to wrap their season up was the 1st XV. Having already sent the Isberg Trophy to the engravers, the boys were looking to add their second piece of silverware to the collection, the Murray Jensen Cup, for the Premier 2 winners.Having not lost a game in their division the boys were right to be confident but we all know anything can happen in a final.

With gathering restrictions lifted in time, the team had a packed crowd determined to get them over the line in the final against local rivals, St Pats Silverstream. The game definitely did not disappoint. Silverstream took an early lead however, with the perfect blend of skill, physicality and tactics Upper Hutt overpowered their neighbours and won the game 22-10. Champions!

Congratulations to all of our teams who represented the school this year and a special mention to all of our parents, caregivers, coaches, managers, officials and supporters. Without you, sport is not possible! We now look forward to emulating similar successes when summer sport kicks off in term 4.
