Polyfest

Emily Molioo —

Pasifika Captain Emily Molioo has written this report from a fantastic Polyfest last weekend.

Wow! Where to even begin… Polyfest this year has been nothing short of a rollercoaster filled with lots of laughter, sweat, and tears. Happy tears, of course.

Our Polyfest journey began on 4 February 2025. We had roughly 60 students sign up with the same goal—to represent their culture on the big stage. Our first practice was quiet, I could tell everyone was nervous just by looking at them. Seeing so many students eager to participate was overwhelming.

As the weeks passed, the girls grew not just in skill, but in confidence. With each practice, their movements became sharper, their voices stronger, and their connection to their culture deeper. They put in the hard work, pushing through every challenge with determination. By the time Polyfest arrived, they weren't just prepared, they were ready to give it everything they had.

As they stepped onto the stage, they gave it their all. Every movement was strong, every chant carried meaning, and through their performance, they told stories of those who came before them. Watching them, I felt an overwhelming sense of pride. Not just for how well they performed, but for the journey that got them there. The road to Polyfest wasn't easy, but they showed up, put in the work, and created something truly special. This was more than just a performance. It was a tribute to their culture, their ancestors, and everything that brought them to this moment.

But this journey wouldn’t have been possible without the support of so many people. Our deepest gratitude goes to the Komiti, who guided and uplifted us every step of the way. To the amazing parents who came in every Saturday to provide meals for us, ensuring we were well-fed and taken care of thank you. To Ms Palmer, who supervised us and worked tirelessly behind the scenes to make sure everything ran smoothly. We appreciate you more than words can say. To the teachers who sacrificed hours of their time to come and support us, your presence meant the world.

And, of course, to our incredible tutors, Rai and Pena. None of this would have been possible without you. Your dedication, patience, and passion pushed us to be the best versions of ourselves. You taught us not just the moves, but the meaning behind them. We are truly grateful for everything they've done.

A huge thank you to Cherie, who provided our material, Leata, who sewed our beautiful Puletasi, and Jimmy, who did the printing. Your hard work and generosity made sure we not only performed with pride but looked incredible doing it.

This journey was more than just a performance. It was a testament to our culture, our strength, and the power of community. And for that, I am forever grateful.
