International Languages Week

Angela Palmer —

A week focused on the different cultures and languages we get to celebrate in detail!

This year’s International Languages Week has had a variety of events to celebrate our diverse community here at Villa Maria. On Tuesday, ākonga were able to have a Kimono experience supported by the Canterbury Japanese Society who kindly came in to Villa to dress ākonga in kimono.

On Wednesday, we had a Korean movie and popcorn at lunchtime.

On Thursday, we were lucky enough to have the performances by Kapa Haka, Pasifika and Filipino ākonga who shared their cultures and expertise in song and dance.

To finish International Languages Week, ākonga were encouraged to be proud of their cultural identity and dress in their national costume for Cultural Mufti day on Friday, celebrating with international food. Hopefully ākonga have become more aware of the many cultures, flags, food, languages and scripts in our world during Ako time with quizzes and games.
