We're driving home the message about vaping

Megan Cassidy —

We all know about the harmful effects of vaping. As a College, we've been sharing this information with students and telling them about how they can access help to deal with vaping addiction.

Vaping is prohibited at all times in schools (including grounds and buildings)

  • Vapes contain nicotine which is addictive and a stimulant like caffeine. Nicotine can impair adolescent brain development, sleep quality and mental health
  • Vaping can result in lower lung function, and inflammation in the airways and in the blood vessels, similar to that seen with tobacco smoke, which leads to lung and cardiovascular disease
  • The tobacco industry has heavily invested in e-cigarettes, which suggests that they envisage the upsurge in vaping is a way of maintaining and recruiting nicotine-dependent users

Our counselling team can help students with referrals for vaping addiction counselling at Odyssey House here in Christchurch. We also have heaps of useful material on the Waiora page on our website

People can also call Quitline on 0800 778 778.
