Year 7 - Science

Dwayne McCormick —

Discover, Explore, and Thrive! Dive into hands-on exploration, nurture inquiry skills, and embrace the essence of science.

Year 7 Science offers a journey into the world of scientific discovery. It is a compulsory course designed to ignite the curiosity and knowledge of our young ākonga.

This course is enriched with five engaging units that seamlessly integrate mātauranga Māori perspectives while adhering to the New Zealand curriculum strands, which encompass The Living World, The Material World, The Physical World, and Planet Earth and Beyond.

At the heart of it all, the overarching strand, The Nature of Science, weaves its way through every unit, empowering ākonga to grasp the essence of science, follow the scientific method, and comprehend the vital role of science in their daily lives.

Hands-on exploration is a fundamental aspect of this course. Ākonga actively participate in practical work, immersing themselves in our specialist laboratories and even venturing down to our local stream to gain a firsthand understanding of scientific concepts.

In Year 7 Science, we nurture a multitude of skills among our ākonga. They dive into the world of scientific inquiry, honing their abilities to investigate, gather, interpret, and communicate their discoveries. Emphasizing the importance of kaitiakitanga (guardianship and protection), students actively contribute to creating sustainable environments through practical initiatives.

Year 7 Science offers learning experiences throughout the year. These include field trips that deepen their understanding of our taiao (environment), science badge activities that reward their achievements, and enlightening guest speakers who provide valuable insights into the world of science.

To support this journey, there is a course contribution of $40 for online resources and Science badge worksheets, ensuring that ākonga have the tools they need to excel.
