Wiki o te Reo VLN 2022 by VLN Primary

Kōnui Wiki o te Reo Māori!

To celebrate Wiki o te Reo Māori in 2022 VLN Primary ākonga hosted an interactive Zoom for nearly 1500 tamariki around Aotearoa - from Rakiura Stewart Island right up to Te Tai Tokerau Northland!

50 year celebration

Fifty years ago te reo Māori was in grave danger of dying out. Aware of this tragedy, Hana Te Hemara was supported by elders and activists who marched on parliament to deliver the Māori language petition. The petition was signed by thirty three thousand Māori and Pakeha. It called for te reo Māori to be taught in New Zealand schools. Today, the Māori language is living and growing.

Ngā mihi

A heartfelt ngā mihi nui to the tauira who put in the mahi to become our wonderful presenters. It’s a daunting task to kōrero in any new language, let alone to well over a thousand of your peers. They mihi manuhiri with a karanga, guided them through actions for karakia and waiata, then invited everyone in action games to better understand pepeha and the well known rerenga 'Kei te pēhea koe?'. Check out the free resource that supported the Zoom here.

Our student presenters were from VLN Primary’s Te Reo Māori programmes and based throughout Aotearoa.

  • Savanah, Whataroa School, West Coast
  • Ryleigh, Ngamatapouri School, Taranaki
  • Jaedyn, The Gardens School, Tāmaki Makaurau
  • Hineiti and Jayda, Moawango School, Ahuriri

Kōnui tō mahi kotiro! A big thumbs up for your effort. Not only for Wiki o te Reo Māori, but also as learners alongside all of our tauira who are taking the time to put in the mahi to learn te reo - kia kaha!

Helping to meet the need in schools

Te Māori is growing but it could be thriving! At VLN Primary we see a great need in our schools to provide opportunities to learn and increase the number of confident te reo speakers. We work with schools to provide these opportunities online. Te reo Māori and Kapa Haka are our most popular classes. We want to raise the profile of learning online and get support for more schools to access our expertise and grow their confidence and capability in te reo me tikanga Māori. Please be in contact if your community's kura could be supported by VLN Primary.

Sign up to our VLN Primary newsletter to keep in the loop about online learning opportunities for you and your ākonga.
