Rural Schools are special schools! by Rachel Whalley

Funding support for U1 - U3 schools

This trial funding initiative is aimed at reducing barriers for small rural schools in gaining equitable access to a rich curriculum through online learning. Thanks to the MOE for recognising this need and supporting schools to participate in VLN classes.

Small rural and remote schools make up a large percentage of schools currently learning online. Our May 2021 analysis shows 75% of VLNP participating schools were U1 - U3 (student population of 150 or less).

We know that for many of our small rural schools equitable access to the curriculum is a challenge, as is funding their students' participation in VLNP programmes. Schools often advise us that they are unable to participate due to costs.

Funding Information:

The current funding initiative is for Semester 2, 2022 (15 weeks Term 3 & 4)

Funding covers participation costs for U1 - 3 schools for:

  • Y 5 - 8 learners to participate in a mixed schools language class and/or one other specialist class;
  • and/or whole class Te reo Māori or Kapa haka.
Note: this is dependent on funding limits and eteacher availability. We reserve the right to limit placements and prioritise registrations if needed.

The VLN Primary is a schools' based initiative as such schools will need to become VLN Primary members. The cost for schools to join for the remainder of the year is $170 (gst excl).

We have lots of great new programmes available this year - see our full prospectus here.

To apply for this funding, register your participation, noting your school's U grading. Please register your interest in participating in Semester 2 programmes here.

Information sessions will be running Thursday 16 June 4.00 pm and Friday 17 June 8 am contact us to register or ask any questions here
