Kaumātua | Grandparents & Whānau Day

Rachael Coll —

Whakamahana kei tōku ngakau! It warms my heart to see how our kura celebrated our Grandparents, Kaumātua and Whānau Day.

We had 304 whānau visit kura, plus 4 whānau on 'zoom'. We couldn't even fit us all into the Cove! Our tamariki shared their thoughts, their learning and their aroha with their Grandparents and extended whānau - in their classrooms and in the assembly, where they talked about how much they love being at Waihī Beach School and were very thankful to have their whānau visit. Their words were humbling and genuine, which I believe came from the energy and wairua that our precious grandparents and whānau brought to school that morning.

Our grandparents presence was a taonga - the stories they told, the artefacts they shared, the memories they have, and the joy they brought to our kura - we were all so grateful for our special morning with them!

We are all mokopuna | grandchildren, and the word mokopuna derives from moko and puna - "Moko is the facial tattoo, our trademark we wear. Puna is a spring or pool of water within which we see our reflection. Therefore, mokopuna is a reflection of ourselves" ~ Darren Rewi
