Kapa Haka noho marae

The theme of our Kapa Haka noho | sleepover was about whanaungatanga | relationships and connection.

Check out the photo album of our awesome overnight stay at Waihī Community Marae.

Tamariki took part in activities that enabled them to work together while learning and creating stories. They observed the many carvings around the Waihi Community Marae.

Each carving told stories of important myths such as Maui capturing the sun and Papatūānuku and Ranginui being separated. Tuakana | older students led the activity reciting the stories to teina | younger students and supported the younger students to re-tell the stories in picture form.

Tamariki learned waiata and the meaning of their songs by using drama and freeze-frames to represent the meaning of each line in the waiata. There was lots of interpretation of high level concepts - powerful learning!

In pairs, students completed some weaving. They chose colours to create art that could be interpreted into a story. Some groups told stories of stairs going up, fish swimming or nature.
