Sport at Dio is in full swing. Here are some highlights from the past few weeks.

School Cross-country 2023

What a fantastic day with House chanting, high participation and great Dio spirit.

The day consisted of non-competitive (fun run) and three competitive races.

Our Top House this year was Ross - well done, Ross House!

A massive shout-out to the Dio staff that contributed to the day's running and made this a memorable experience for the students.


Waikato Secondary Schools' Cross-country - Tauhara Park, Hamilton

Eleven students from our Dio Cross-country team competed in the Waikato event on 24 May. Congratulations to all our competitors.

Swimming

Open Water Swimming

Sophie Hays was the first female overall in the Bean Rock 3.2km swim held on 6 May, completing this race in just over 48 minutes. Awesome results, Sophie!

Well done to Hayley McIntyre, who podiumed in the Bean Rock race for her age group and finished in second position with a time of 55:44 

After the swim, Hayley got out, re-fuelled and completed the Amphibian race, which consisted of an 800m swim, 5km run and 500m swim and placed 1st female overall. Well done, Hayley!

New Zealand National Age Group Championships

Hayley McIntyre, Sophie Hay, Arie Riley, and Paige Stringer competed in the New Zealand National Age Group Championships from the 12 to 16 April in Hawkes Bay Regional Aquatic Centre. We had some outstanding results from all our competitors.

Sophie Hay

  • 1500m Freestyle - Silver
  • 800m Freestyle - Silver, and setting a new Waikato Record
  • 400m Freestyle - 4th, and setting a new Waikato Record
  • 400m Individual Medley - 4th


Hayley McIntyre

  • 200m Backstroke - 8th
  • 4 x 50m Freestyle Mixed 15 & Under Relay - 6th
  • 4 x 50m Medley Mixed 15 & Under Relay - 6th


Ariella Riley

  • 1500m Freestyle - Silver
  • 800m Freestyle - Silver
  • 400m Freestyle - Silver
  • 200m Freestyle - 5th
  • 400m Individual Medley - 4th
  • 4 x 100m Freestyle Women 15 & Under Relay - Gold
  • 4 x 100m Medley Women 15 & Under Relay - Gold


Paige Stringer

Karate - Oceania Cadet and Junior Karate Championships

On May 5, Lilli Parries competed in the Oceania Cadet and Junior Karate Championships in NSW, Australia. Her results were:

Oceania - Female Kumite Junior -66kg -2nd

Australia Open - Female Kumite Junior -66kg - 1st

Australia Open - Female Kumite Junior Open - 7th

Equestrian - NISS Horse Trials

The NISS Horse Trials consisted of a two-day competition hosted in Taupo on 20 - 21 May this year.

The riders competed in dressage and showjumping on day one and cross-country on day two.

Dio entered a team of four girls; Ruby Wilson, Jessica Steele, Zoe Garland, and Felicity Jones.

Our Results

  • Felicity Jones - 4th in her group
  • Zoe Garland - 7th in her group.
  • Dio's team placed 10th/18 overall.

This was a good experience competing at the National Equine Centre for the first time. Well done, Dio riders!


Auckland Dio Exchange

On May 22, our hockey, football and netball codes travelled to Auckland Dio to compete in our annual Dio Exchange. It was a fantastic day with great competition, rivalry, and sportsmanship. Overall, Auckland Dio took the win 15 - 9. Check out the photos from the day in our DioNews Gallery section.
