Congratulations to all our Dio athletes currently representing Dio at Summer Tournament.

New Zealand Secondary Schools Futsal Competition - 27 to 29 March, Akau Tangi Sports Centre, Wellington.

Over three days, our Senior A Futsal team played seven games, placing 2nd overall in their respective pool and progressing to the 5th-8th playoffs.

We lost two games, in the playoffs and placed 8th out of 25 teams.

Well done, team; feedback from your team managers was that you showed courage, and diligence and had a fantastic time.

NZSS Tennis Cup 27 - 29 March, Lugton Tennis Club, Hamilton

Three Dio students played in the NZ school tournament with mixed results over the busy three days.

Dio lost to ACG Parnell and Woodford house in very close games.

Dio won against St Paul's Collegiate and St Margaret's College.

Our team placed 9th overall - well done.

Volleyball

Our Senior A Volleyball team is in the final for their division at the NZSS Competition. As this issue went to publication, the game was still underway! Congratulations, Team Volleyball!

Equestrian

A selected team of four riders made up of Libby Street, Fleur Street, Madison Tierney and Zara Cowen competed at a world-class equestrian facility - Takapoto Estate, against 45 secondary school teams and 180 riders in the Pegasus Cup. The Team came home 6th place, and our riders had individual wins and placings.

  • Libby Street - 1st 110cm Equitation and 3rd in the 105 Accumulator
  • Fleur Street - 1st in the 90cm 2 Phase and 10th in the Equitation.
  • Zara Cowen - 9th in the 110cm Accumulator and 11th in the 105cm Equitation
  • Madison Tierney - 1st in the 105cm Equitation and 8th in the 105cm Accumulator.

Open Water Swimming 

The blue waters and native forest of Lake Tikitapu (Blue Lake) hosted the 'Legend of the Lake' 2023 New Zealand Secondary School Open Water Swimming Championships yesterday.

Congratulations to our open-water Team Dio swimmers, who finished second out of 66 schools! That's some achievement. Thank you to all those who supported our students in this result.

Our Dio team was impressive, with some national titles and podium finishes!

12-13 years

  • 1st  place Tessa Scott 500m
  • 1st  place Tessa Scott 3.5km

14-15 Years

  • 2nd place Hayley McIntyre 500m
  • 3rd place Hayley McIntyre 3.6km

16-19 Years

  • 1st place Sophie Hay 3.5km

Sophie was the first overall female AND 4th swimmer to finish too! Our swim superstar, Deputy Principal, Mrs Johnstone, also competed and finished 3rd in her age group.

Rowing

North Island Secondary Schools Regatta

Sixteen Dio crews competed across 5 B and 11 A finals at the Aon North Island Secondary Schools Rowing Championships, finishing Top Joint School based on Points in the North Island!

Silver - U18 Girls Coxed Four Alex Peoples, Te Aumihi Haggie, Isabel Melville, Xanthe Lovegrove-Edlington + Maya Trower

Bronze  - U15 Girls Coxed 4 Lucy Hadley, Victoria Melville, Matta Daniel, Olivia Carruthers, + Kiri Ormsby 

Sophia Mason, Alex Hull, Lucy McLean-Bluck, Kate Sinclair and Coxswain, and Addison Watts won the Girls U15 Coxed Quad Sculls B Final!

Lacrosse

The Dio Lacrosse players had a successful weekend away at U18 Lacrosse Nationals earlier this month.

Old Girls Nicole Hollands and Katie Hollands were representatives of the Waikato U18 A team who won the final against Auckland 11-3.

Nicole was selected for the National Tournament team - one of the ten players selected.

Kate Marshall, Sienna Meinung and Sarah Cane were representatives of the Waikato Development team who finished 3rd, winning in the game's final minutes 3-2.

National Selections

Holly Landon, Harriet Cooper and Old Girl Maddy Shale have all been named in the NZ Junior Maaori Women's Team!

They will compete in the 2023 NZ Heritage Hockey Annual Easter Tournament, from the 7th-10th of April. Best of luck!

Athletics

The Waikato/BOP Secondary Schools' Championships were held at Porritt Stadium, and Dio had some fantastic results.

  • Junior Girls 300m - 2nd Bella Cochrane
  • Junior 3000m - 3rd Tessa Scott
  • Senior Girls 100m - 2nd Aylee Gane
  • Senior Girls 200m - 2nd Aylee Gane

These Top 3 place getters have automatic entry into the North Island Secondary Schools Champs this weekend (April 1-2).

Our Junior 4x100m relay team (Poppy McKay, Josie Lee, Keava Burrough and Bella Cochrane) placed 4th, and our Senior team (Tamarah Connolly, Sophia Smyth, Zoe Oliver-Dowling and Aylee Gane) placed 2nd.
