The orchestra and Jazz band have been practising very hard lately in preparation for the Rhapsody Rotorua Music Festival, which we will attend on June 26. This Australian music festival features orchestras, jazz bands, and choirs from all over New Zealand and Australia.

Congratulations to the Dio Jazz Band, who were awarded Silver at the March National Youth Jazz Band Festival. Well done to all our talented musicians and Musical Directors, Maria Colvin and Clive Burnell. 

On 18 May, Scarlett Cox (Year 11) competed at the Smokefree Rockquest heats in the band Running Fred with students from Hamilton Boys' High School, Sacred Heart College and homeschooled students. They were fortunate to be among 12 bands selected for the regional final. Congratulations to Scarlett and her bandmates.

It has been an extremely busy couple of months for Dio’s Music Groups. With regional competitions coming up fast, students and staff have been putting in the mahi to ensure we do our best. We have also participated in school events like the annual exchange with Auckland Dio. This was an incredible opportunity for technical improvement and connecting with like-minded students who have a passion for music and singing.

Cantiamo and Bel Suono Choir will be performing/competing at the Big Sing Regionals held in Tauranga on 13 June. This annual competition is the highlight of the year for many, and to prepare, the choirs have had the privilege of working with external choral directors in workshops (alongside weekly rehearsals and singing lessons ). Students have been working on improving technical and performance skills and are excited about the fast-approaching regional competition.

The Espresso Barbershop chorus is preparing for the YSIH ( Young Singers In Harmony ) Regional competition on June 10 at Sacred Heart Girls' College. This is one of the most important dates in Espresso’s calendar, and everyone is looking forward to this exciting day dedicated to barbershop singing and performance.
