Waikato Secondary School Championship Results

Cheerleading

Well done to our Cheerleaders, who competed in the Battle of the Bay Competition hosted in Tauranga. Dio won the High School Scholastic 1-2 division by marginal points. 

The Waikato Dio Level 1 Girls Cheer Squad placed 5th at the 'Schools Spectacular' competition in Auckland over the weekend.

Also in action over the weekend were Dio students Ava O'Hearn, Meg Enerson, Charli Murphy and Piper Peart who were part of the Cheer Dynamix 007 Impact team who won the Senior Level 3 trophy at the 2023 Alpine Classic Cheerleading competition in Christchurch.

Football

1st XI SS Girl Football League

Our 1st XI team were undefeated this season in the Waikato Secondary Schools competition and the proud winners of the WSS Premier Girls 1st XI League. For the first time in 10 years, they are also the title holders of the WSS Girls Football Challenge Shield.

The team won the Knockout Cup 1st XI Girls Waikato Competition against Hamilton Girls High 1-0.

2nd XI SS Girl Football League

Our 2nd XI Team played their season finals, winning the WSS Division 3 competition and finishing runners-up in the Senior Girls Knock Out Cup.

Junior A SS Girl Football League

Junior A Football won their final game for the season against Hamilton Girls High School, 2-1, finishing their season first equal on points in the Junior 1st Division in a 3-way tie with Hamilton Girls High School and Hillcrest High.  Dio placed 2nd on the table once the goal difference was considered.

Hockey

Congratulations to our Hockey teams who played their final league games.

Dio Junior A

Dio won 2-1 against Cambridge High in the U15A final, ending the season as the U15A WSS Hockey 2023 league winners!

Dio Junior Yellow

Dio came out on top with a 2-0 win vs. Hamilton Girls High School in the U15B final. Great work, team - well done for being crowned U15B WSS Hockey 2023 league winners.

Dio Senior Blue

Senior Blue fought it out in the finals vs. Melville Fraser for the U18 D Grade title, with Dio winning 3 goals to 1.

Bronze for Holly

Despite not initially trialling for Waikato for the NHC (National Hockey Championship) due to other commitments, Year 13's Holly Landon got a call from Waikato Hockey asking if she could play for Wairarapa as their goalie had been injured.

As a result, Holly was lucky enough to play in the 2nd tier of the national competition with the Wairarapa team and secure a bronze medal! Congratulations, Holly.

Lacrosse

Premier//Development LeagueLaCrosse Prem

Dio Premier team played their final game against Hillcrest High and won (9-4). Well done to the team placing 3rd overall in the league.

The Dio development team won their last game against St Peters Cambridge, placing 3rd overall

Congratulations to Nicole Hollands and Kiera Lloyd, who have been selected for the NZ U20 Women's training squad. The team will compete at the U20 Women’s World Lacrosse Championships in Hong Kong in 2024.

Netball

HamCity SS Netball Saturday League

Dio entered 14 Teams in the HamCity Competition: Nine competitive and five social teams.

We had some fantastic results across the grades.

  • 9A - winners of Year 9 A grade
  • 9Red - winners of Year 9 Social grade
  • 10A - winners of Year10B grade
  • Senior A - winners of Senior Social grade

Three Dio Teams were undefeated this season and, as a result, were bumped up to a higher grade. Well done!

A round of applause to all our Netball players who embraced the season's challenges, set team goals and followed through!

Indoor Premier League

Our Prem Team played in the finals against St Paul's Collegiate in the Thursday Night Open Indoor League and won 34-29, winning the Indoor Premier B League for 2023!

NZ Secondary School Championships & Winter Tournament Results

Hockey

Our 1st XI Hockey Team competed in the NZSS Hockey Competition in Christchurch from 28 August to 1 September. The team placed 10th overall in the top-tier Marie Fry Cup. This is an incredible achievement with great improvement from 2022. It was an enjoyable week to bond and explore a different city. True sportsmanship was shown with wins and losses and incredible team growth.

Sport Climbing

On August 28 and 29, the Dio Climbing team competed at the New Zealand Secondary School Sports Climbing Competition in Tauranga. The team showed true sportsmanship, working through tough competition and was awarded the  ‘Best Team Spirit'.

Dio placed 2nd overall with impressive results from the entire team, with two junior and two senior climbers making it to the finals.

Junior Competition Results

Grace Walden placed 6th in the boulder/lead final and 7th in the speed

Sophie Carmichael placed 8th in the boulder/lead final

Senior Competition Results

Both Zoe Weldon and Renna Park competed in the Speed finals, with Renna placing 2nd overall in Boulder/Lead final and 8th in speed and Zoe placing 7th in speed.

Netball

Dio entered two teams in the UNISS competition hosted locally at Hamilton City Netball Centre between 28 August - 1 September. Our Premier and Invitation teams made Dio proud with tough competition of over 115 teams competing for the title.

Premier Team

Dio Prem Team finished 15th overall in the A Grade with some excellent teamwork and diligence.

Invitation Team

This young team gained fantastic tournament experience, was undefeated for most of their games and finished 12th in the D Grade.

Football

Dio 1st XI Football Team competed in the NZSS Girls Football Competition in Taupo from 28 August - 1 September. The team demonstrated true Dio values with amazing comradery.

The team placed 2nd in their pool, resulting in competition from the top 16 schools and finished 15th overall in the tournament (an improvement from 19th in 2022).

Congratulations to Mia Humphrey, who was awarded MVP of the week.

An impressive season all around. Well done, Dio Footballers.

Cycling

The Dio Cycling Team competed in the NZSS Northern Tour Hill Climb on September 2 and 3.

Hill Climb

  • U15 Girls - Brooke Devaney 8th, Gabriella Schuitemaker 12th, Elyse Barnett 14th
  • U16 Girls - Catriona Fairweather 12th , Caitlin Wright 18th, Daisy Zheng 19th

Criterium

  • U15 Girls - Gabriella Schuitemaker 8th, Brooke Devaney 9th, Elyse Barnett 16th
  • U16 Girls - Catriona Fairweather 12th, Caitlin Wright 16th

Weight Lifting

Through our school fitness centre, Dio Sports Coordinator and Weightlifting NZ coach Gabi Peach recruited students to participate in Weightlifting to increase our numbers competing at the New Zealand Secondary Schools competition. As a result, Dio had the largest number of entries from any attending school (17), ten podium finishes, won Top Girls Team, and received the Bayleys NZ Altogether Better Team prize.
