Petra's Passion for Ocean sees her attend Blake Inspire For Sailors 2022

Dio Communications —

This term, Year 12 student Petra Pratt-Rink, a junior member of the Royal New Zealand Yacht Squadron, was fortunate enough to be selected as one of the 20 young sailors from yachting clubs all over NZ to attend Blake Inspire For Sailors 2022. The program was a week-long, ocean experiential learning adventure in Auckland.

Petra was introduced to sailing about five years ago when her parents decided to learn how to sail. Following in their footsteps she quickly became obsessed with sailing and started crewing in winter series yacht racing. Petra decided to throw herself in the deep end and apply for Blake Inspire. Knowing she wasn't the most experienced sailor she hoped her incredible passion for the ocean would see her through. It did!

During the week, Petra got to learn about topical environmental issues facing New Zealand from inspiring experts in the field and heroes from within environmental and sailing communities - as well as sailing on board Sir Peter’s legendary Steinlager 2 in the Hauraki Gulf.

She also visited pest-free Tiritiri Matangi Island to experience a thriving ecosystem, learnt about the legacy of Sir Peter Blake, took part in marine science field trips with some of New Zealand’s leading scientists and marine experts, and got to spend time with Emirates Team New Zealand.

Most importantly, Petra returned home with new friends, networks and leadership capabilities and strategies to start driving positive change and start leading a sustainable future within her community and yacht clubs.

Great work, Petra!
