Ready-Made Gateway Programmes 2023

Following is some information on the ready-made Gateway programmes running in 2023.

These include:

Radio Broadcasting

Students will spend four days at Mediaworks Hamilton learning about radio broadcasting law, recording and editing for radio broadcasts, plus planning and broadcasting a radio programme.

Who is eligible: Students in Years 12 & 13

Credits: Level 2 - 10 credits, Level 3 - 10 credits - TOTAL 20x credits

What is required: 4 days of work experience during the 2nd week of the April holidays

Countdown Programme

Gain valuable retail knowledge and on-the-job experience, plus industry-related NCEA credits.

Who is eligible: Students in Years 11 & 12

Credits: Level 2 - 22x credits

What is required: 1-day training course, plus five days work experience at either weekends or school holidays.

McDonald's Programme

The McDonald's OASIS programme offers students interested in hospitality the chance to get hands-on experience along with industry-related unit standards.

Who is eligible: Students in Years 11 & 12

Credits: Level 2 - 17x credits

What is required: Students must attend a brief induction plus 30hrs work experience during school holidays

Retail Ready - Customer Service Award

Students will earn NCEA credits that can be used toward the nationally recognised Certificate in Retail. The units will be completed online, and a workplace will be found for students.

Who is eligible: Students in Years 11 & 12

Credits: Level 2 - 22x credits

What is required: Students must complete units in their own time, plus five days of work experience in a retail store. All units must be completed to receive the award.

Sky City Gateway in Kitchens

Students interested in a career as a chef will assist the chef team with food production in Local Taphouse, Zone Bar, and Eat Burger.

Who is eligible: Students in Year 13

Credits: Level 3 - 18x credits

What is required: Students must attend ten days of work experience, normally during one school holiday TBC. Some theory work will need to be completed in your own time.

Food Stuffs Bakery programme

Students will learn the roles and responsibilities of working in a modern bakery environment, being involved in day-to-day duties and gaining first-hand knowledge and experience.

Who is eligible: Students in Year 13

Credits: Level 3 - 18x credits

What is required: Students must attend ten days of work experience, either during one school holiday or during term time (if approved). Some theory work will need to be completed in your own time.

Aviation/ Aeroscience

This Service IQ programme is a fantastic opportunity for students to progress to an aviation career while still at school. The external assessment will also provide real Private Pilot theory exams. Subjects include Human Factors, Meteorology, and Aircraft Technical knowledge (with an engineering focus). Students wanting to become pilots must also complete Flight Radio Telephone Operator, Aviation Law & Navigation.

An external theory exam pass is required to validate the programme completion and to be awarded the Civil Aviation Approved Pilots License theory subject examination credits and NCEA credits.

Who is eligible: Students in Year 13

Credits: Level 3 - between 20-33 credits

What is required: There is a considerable workload involved with this course. Students should consider this carefully and discuss options.

Maaori Tourism Cultural Camp

This camp is a memorable adventure in a stunning setting at a Marae near Waitomo Caves. Students will have the rare opportunity to gain first-hand experience, practical skills and unit standards while staying in a unique NZ cultural setting. Students will study Maaori Tourism units, learn about nearby tourist attractions, and the history of Tikanga of host marae.

Who is eligible: Students in Years 12 & 13

Credits: Level 3 - 20x credits

What is required: Students would attend a 5-day camp. You may be required to complete pre-camp student learning material before arriving.
